Hagerstown man injured in shootout with Deputy County Frederick, authorities say – CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) – A 28-year-old Hagerstown man was hospitalized early Friday after dealing with a Frederick County deputy, authorities said.
The shooting broke out shortly after 2:45 a.m. after a co-pilot attempted to stop the man’s vehicle on suspicion of driving under the influence of Interstate 270, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office said.

Instead of pulling over to the side of the road, the driver continued to get out of the vehicle and walk, Police Chief Chuck Jenkins said. At some point, Jenkins said, the man opened fire on the co-pilot and was hit when the co-pilot returned fire.
The sheriff said the driver, Lookman-Khalil Abolajo Bello, was shot three times. He said the co-pilot gave first aid to the driver, who was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma for treatment.
“Thankfully, my understanding is that he’s alive,” Jenkins said. “He’s in a stable condition.”

It is unclear exactly how many shots were fired during the gunfire exchange. Jenkins said investigators are still working to determine that. He said a second deputy involved in the foot chase heard gunfire but did not see the shooting.
The sheriff said his agency is still in the process of rolling out a body camera program and that the deputy minister is not equipped with a body camera.
Based on radio traffic, Jenkins said it was clear his deputy was fired in the first place before firing back.

“It was very clear,” he said. “Remember, however, the investigation is premature. There’s still a lot to learn. ”
