Founded in 1972, Sunrise Inc. is one of the most famous animation studios in Japan. The studio’s corporate name will no longer be available starting this spring.

IT Media reported that Sunrise will become Bandai Namco Filmworks effective April 1, 2022. Bandai Namco Arts and Bandai Namco Marketing will merge with Sunrise to form the new entity. Sunrise President Makoto Asanuma will assume the role of president and CEO of Bandai Namco Filmworks.

This is not an April Fool’s joke. because it’s the start of the Japanese fiscal year. When companies make changes, such as a rebranding or merger, the new name goes into effect from the start. Furthermore, Sunrise Music, the studio’s musical subsidiary, will also participate with Bandai Namco Live Creative to create Bandai Namco Music Live.

In an official releaseBandai Namco explains that this restructuring will give better leverage to the expertise.

Sunrise has been in the company’s portfolio for decades. Bandai acquires animation studio in 1993 before it then merged with Namco in 2006, forming Bandai Namco.

Sunrise was founded by former employees of Mushi Production, originally an anime studio headed by Osamu Tezuka. Sunrise has created some of the most iconic anime ever, including Gundam and its sequels, Sgt. Frog, Cowboy Bebop, Gin Tama, City Hunter, Inuyasha, Tiger and Bunnyand Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellionamong many others.

This is not the first name change for Sunrise. The studio was founded as Sunrise Studio, but the company’s moniker was changed to Nippon Sunrise Inc. in 1976. Then, in 1987, the studio’s name became Sunrise Inc., dropping the name “Nippon”. However, throughout its entire history, the word “sunrise” has remained. Getting rid of it really feels like a turning point – a loss even.

According to Bandai Namco’s official statement, it looks like Sunrise may still be a brand. But as a corporate entity, starting this April, the sun has set. Gundam Anime Studio Sunrise is officially changing its name
