Google Duo hits 5 billion downloads on Play Store

Google’s top video calling app has now passed 5 billion downloads milestone Play Store.

While the download figures are certainly overdone due to the global pandemic and the fact that Google Duo ships with Android on millions of devices sold each year, the video calling app has become a mainstay in the ” Top Apps” of the Play Store. Confusingly, this isn’t Google’s only video calling service, as the conferencing-focused Meet launched some time earlier in 2017, while Duo launched back in 2019. , Duo is a more consumer-focused option than Meet for businesses. Google planned to merge Meet and Duo, but this the merger collapsed late last year and it’s unclear what the future holds for Android’s default video calling app. Google Meet has been added to Gmail but is far behind Duo’s 5 billion downloads with the most recent milestone being 100 million milestone, reached almost two years ago.
