The patients who were hospitalized were in stable condition and suffering from chest pain and shortness of breath, Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman Adam Flory said.

Smoke is suspected to be the cause, but the fire brigade was unable to identify any gases present.

“Twenty-two[individuals]who have symptomatic conditions, there’s obviously something that triggered it,” Flory said.

“If we look at the total number of patients and the number of people who are complaining of symptoms, we have to try to get to the bottom of the cause of those symptoms, whether it’s an irritant or a food, we don’t know really .

“We are unable to determine the cause of this incident.”

The investigations are ongoing.
