God of War Knock-Off is sold on the Xbox Store

A crappy title screen shows Kratos standing in a large, sandy arena.

God of War Ragnarok is one of the most anticipated games of 2022 and has, as the kids say, amazed people all over the world. But it only comes for PlayStation consoles. Well don’t worry Xbox gamers, someone spent at least 20 minutes developing an Xbox version of God of War. Except that it uh… sucks, looks awful, and probably isn’t authorized by Sony.

As discovered by Eurogamer, there is a new and fairly cheap action game on Xbox that seems to be played by Kratos. The game has the not at all clunky title of Child gods of war Zeus and is available in the US for $4.09. Seems like a deal until You see the game in action

The game has no sound effects or music, limited animations break easily and it lacks real depth. It’s just waves of the same enemy attacking Kratos over and over as he thrashes about, killing them and earning a point for each defeated. Almost everything in the game looks like it’s a perk stolen from somewhere else, including the enemies that appear to be a monster of a resident Evil Game. Also, the title screen of the game has a different name.god of warning.”

Here’s the game’s description from its actual store page, which disturbingly looks identical to every other game on the Xbox Store:

War Gods Zeus the Child is a great war game. Destroy all enemies and creatures with the Zeus gods of war the challenge [sic]. Kill them all with your gun. Launch attacks with different combos. Reach the highest monster kills without dying. Feel the power of the warning God.

kotaku contacted Microsoft about this clear fake and asked the company how it prevents these types of games from appearing on the store.

It seems that this game, made in Unity and released on July 26th, is part of the Xbox Creators program. The idea is to let smaller teams and solo developers use their consoles as development gear to make it easier for people to develop games and sell them through Xbox and PC. In theory, that’s a cool idea that reminds me a lot of them Xbox Indie Program from the 360 era.

But it also has the potential to be abused by naughty developers trying to flip a few assets to make a quick buck, especially if the games’ review isn’t thorough enough. And during this God of War Clone is more of a terrible joke than a big problem, I’d be nervous about what else gets to slip onto the Xbox Store with seemingly little oversight.
