Gleyber Torres brought two MLB stars with him in trade talks
Apparently the Yankees came up with the idea of trading star infielder Gleyber Torres.
After years of refusing to even talk about him, this past MLB trade deadline came and went without a Torres trade.
Afterward, a report it emerged that the Yankees have actually discussed trading Torres, which is a first since they even acquired him from the Cubs.
According to a person with knowledge of the negotiations in New York (via Brendan Kuty of NJ.com), “The Yankees spoke to the Nationals in the early stages of a possible deal with Juan Soto. But the Yankees were never really convinced they could offer a package that would snap up the 23-year-old superstar, and they believed they were looking inside from the outside well before Washington sent Soto to the Padres on Tuesday afternoon.”
Could Gleyber Torres fuel the Yankees rumors this winter?
The Yankees considered moving Torres into deals that would have brought back impressive talent like former Nationals star Juan Soto or the former Brewers. Josh Hader. Both had control for several more years and are superstars. Hader leads MLB in saves while we all know how great Soto is.
That being said, it’s intriguing that the Yankees have considered moving their young second baseman, who isn’t a free agent until 2025. Still, don’t be surprised when teams ask for Torres in the off-season.
The 25-year-old will be in high demand as teams believe they can fix whatever problems he’s struggling with. Torres has 20 doubles and 16 home runs in the season with 46 RBI. He hit .257 with 119 OPS+. Those are pretty good numbers for a second baseman.
The Yanks may be trying to sort out salary this offseason if they can bring Aaron Judge back or sign another player for a big deal. Hicks is clearly not worth the $30+ million he’s owed over the next three years. Neither does Josh Donaldson, who owes $25 million next year. Attaching Torres to these trades makes both players more appetizing in a potential trade.
Only time will tell, but it sounds like the two-time All-Star could be available for teams that need an infielder this offseason.
