Giants coach Antoan Richardson was kicked out in Tuesday night’s game against the Padres. Richardson claimed that Mike Shildt aimed racially coded language at him.
Richardson is the team’s first base coach and was made available to the media to tell his side of the story in a rare move following the Giants’ 13-2 win.
The 38-year-old claims he was shouted at with racially motivated undertones by Padres assistant Mike Shildt and then thrown out by the referee, who was also white.
“He was screaming, ‘You gotta control this motherf***er,'” Richardson said. “At that point, I walked onto the top step and said, ‘Excuse me?’ I couldn’t believe what I heard. At that point, (Greg) Gibson, the crew chief, decided to kick me out of the game. I think his words were disproportionately unjustified and (had) racist overtones as he referred to me as “that motherf***er” as if I were to be controlled or owned or enslaved. I think it’s really important that we understand what happened tonight.”

Antoan Richardson: Mike Shildt yelled at Giants coach with racist undertones
Richardson believes this comment was meant for Giants manager Gabe Kapler, as if to say Kapler needed to have complete control of his property. Of course, if that were Shildt’s intention, it would be understandable why Richardson reacted the way he did.
“The second part, which is equally disappointing, is that I was thrown by that referee, which empowered that coach to keep having conversations like this with people like me and it’s really unfortunate that that happened tonight,” continued Richardson away.
Richardson claimed he was not an instigator in the incident.
As he was ejected, Richardson made way for Alyssa Nakken to become the first female on-field coach in MLB history. While progress has been made on the field, Richardson and the Giants believe Shildt’s tone, and perhaps feelings beneath the surface, are a real issue worth investigating.
