BOSTON (CBS) – Two days after Brian Flores filed a lawsuit against claims of racism in NFL recruiting practices, the New York Giants have denied the coach’s claims while also dismissing the knowledge purportedly by Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
Belichick’s mistake to Flores was the focus of the casebecause they pointed out that the Giants had decided to hire Brian Daboll as their next head coach prior to interviewing Flores, thus leading Flores to conclude that his interview only took place to meet the Rooney Rule of NFL.
But the giants say Bill Belichick had no idea about the hiring process and that using his text messages as evidence was “irresponsible.”
“The allegation that the Giant’s decision was made before the evening of Friday, January 28, is false,” the Giants said in a statement released Thursday night. “And to base that allegation on a text exchange with Bill Belichick in which he ultimately stated that he ‘thought’ Brian Daboll was going to get the job was irresponsible. The text exchange came the day before Coach Daboll’s in-person interview took place. Giants ownership would never hire a head coach based solely on a 20-minute Zoom interview, which was all Mr. Daboll had at the time. ”
The statement continued: “In addition, Mr. Belichick has voiced no support and has no connection to the Giants. Mr. Belichick’s text exchange did not provide details on what really went on during our head coach search. “
The statement begins by saying that Flores’ allegations “are disturbing and simply untrue.” The Giants concluded by saying they did not hire Daboll until January 28, “a day after Mr. Flores’ in-person interview and a day-long visit to the Giants.”
Of course, Belichick didn’t work for the Giants, but he worked for the team from 1979-90, he hold the team in a particularly high respectand he maintains a relationship with the ownership group. In addition, the Giants’ former head coach – Joe Judge, an assistant coach under Belichick – was hired after get a great endorsement from the Patriots head coach. Daboll, like Flores, is also a former assistant to Belichick, so it’s reasonable to surmise Belichick could offer a similar endorsement during this hiring process as well.
Whether or not Belichick really has inside information about the Giants’ hiring process is, at this point, just a rumor and speculation.
What would be the problem and what could be solved if the case entered the discovery phase, where checking outbound and inbound text messages to the Giant’s organization could answer many questions. question posed in the Flores case. Such a step is unlikely, given the NFL’s history of legal strategy. Currently, the parties involved in the lawsuit – the Giants, the main office of the Broncos, the owner of the Dolphins, Stephen Ross – have completely and completely denied the allegations against Flores.
