Ghostbusters Animated Series in the Works on Netflix (EXCLUSIVE)

A new animated series, Ghostbusters, is in development at Netflix. diversity only learned. The series is from Sony Pictures Animation, with Ghost Corps, Inc.’s Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan on board as executive producers. Reitman and Kenan recently co-wrote the live-action feature film Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which Reitman also directed.

Exact details about the plot of the new animated series are currently being kept under wraps. No author is attached at the time of this publication. Production will be handled by Netflix and Ghost Corps, Inc., housed at Sony’s Columbia Pictures.

If the project goes live, it would be the third animated Ghostbusters show in franchise history. Previously, The Real Ghostbusters aired 140 episodes from 1986 to 1991, primarily on ABC and in syndication. It continued the adventures of the characters from the original film. “Extreme Ghostbusters” followed, which aired in syndication for 40 episodes. This show featured a mostly new cast of characters, although the team was led by Egon Spengler.

The Ghostbusters franchise started in 1984 with the first film directed by Ivan Reitman (Jason’s father) and co-written by stars Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. This was followed by Ghostbusters 2 in 1989, which brought back the original core cast and creative team. Paul Feig directed the 2014 reboot of the film Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters: Afterlife premiered in November 2021. It was well-received by critics and grossed nearly $200 million worldwide from a reported budget of $75 million.

News of the new animated series comes as the annual Ghostbusters Day celebrations coincide, during which Jason Reitman and Kenan are expected to reveal more about future Ghostbusters projects. Reitman’s other credits include films such as Up in the Air and Juno, while Kenan previously directed the animated film Monster House.

They are both repeated by WME. Reitman is also reprized by Jackoway Austen Tyerman. Kenan is also repeated by Sloane Offer.
