Alexander Alban broke the internet by mocking Alpine’s driver dispute with Oscar Piastri for their 2023 seat as he recalled his new multi-year deal to continue driving for Williams. Mercedes driver George Russell was amused by Alex Albon’s joke about Alpine during her ongoing contract case with Oscar Piastri.

Tuesday was one of the strangest F1 media days in recent memory as a feud erupted between the Enstone-based racing team and its Australian reserve driver. Alpine announced that Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri would replace two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso in 2023, but it wasn’t long before Piastri issued his own proclamation, denying he had accepted a contract.

The news of Williams’ official statement at 3pm on Wednesday sparked speculation of a surprise signing but proved to be limited to Albon’s contract extension. The British-Thai racer has signed a multi-year deal that will keep him with the team for at least two more seasons.

Alex Albon celebrated by repeating Piastri’s claim almost verbatim while adapting it to his own scenario. “I understand that Williams Racing put out a press release this afternoon with my approval that I will be driving for them next year. That’s right and I signed a contract with Williams for 2023. I will drive for Williams next year.” said Albon.

Piastri, for example, saw the humor in the remark and responded by praising Albon on extending his contract. “Congratulations, buddy,” he wrote before adding a GIF with the caption: “Well done sir, that was very good.” Albon’s close friend George Russell found the whole thing hilarious. “I like this,” wrote the British driver in response to Alex Albon’s hilarious tweet.

It remains to be seen what happens next in the Piastr saga. Alpine obviously believes that the agreement they have with their reserve rider gives them the ability to put him in a racing seat without fear of him going elsewhere by explaining his contract offer without the rider’s consent.
