New Pittsburgh wide receiver George Pickens takes on defenders like Minkah Fitzpatrick at Steelers training camp.
George Pickens might have been a second-round pick, but he’s building first-round expectations early on Steeler career.
At 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, Pickens is clearly a physical threat. He’s already leading Pittsburgh receivers at training camp receptions, so the chemistry with the quarterbacks quickly follows.
Mike Tomlin might downplay his role on offense but fans can sense there’s something there.
On Monday he ticked another box by showing serious competitiveness in training.
Steelers: George Pickens challenges Minkah Fitzpatrick, DBs in training camp
“Steelers rookie George Pickens in deep training,” tweeted Jeff Hathhorn of 93.7 the Fan. “After I missed a route. He caught the next 4 including a few fight catches. He would stare at Minkah and others who were troubling him and said, ‘Don’t say s$&:’ with a straight face.”
Pickens seems to be bringing just the right attitude to training camp when he shows so much combat. It’s one thing to stare at a DB. It’s another thing to do it after making such a big statement, after making a mistake.
It’s proof that he doesn’t let things bother him that aren’t going right. He’s proving he’s able to shrug things off and take it harder in response.
Pickens won a national championship in Georgia, but he never really got to show his true potential in an entire season. He came on the scene as a freshman and led the team with 49 catches for 727 yards and eight touchdowns. However, the 2020 season was limited by COVID-19, then he tore his ACL ahead of the 2021 season and played four games by the end of the season.
His rookie season in the NFL looks like his opportunity to show exactly how high his ceiling can be. It should be fun to watch.
