Fresno State vs. UTEP: Predictions, picks, New Mexico Bowl odds, odds, live stream, watch online, TV channels

The New Mexico Bowl pitted several former WAC rivals against each other when Fresno State and UTEP eliminated following a season of revival for both shows. After going 7-11 in the 2019 and 2020 seasons, the Bulldogs are making their first league appearance since the 2018 season. UTEP, meanwhile, is bowling for the first time since the 2014 New Mexico Bowl following the 2014 New Mexico Bowl. when going through the period 2-34 from 2017 to 2019.

Fresno State will be led by interim coach Lee Marks after Kalen DeBoer leaves Washington following a 9-3 regular season marked by wins over UCLA and San Diego State. Marks is the show’s support coach and will be up against UTEP coach Dana Dimel, who revived the Miners from deep within FBS.

Dimel inherited a team that didn’t win in 2017, and he won a total of two games in his first two seasons. But after the 3-5 season in 2020, the Miners broke through 6-1 for the 2021 campaign. The end result was the show’s third poor appearance in the past 16 seasons.

State of Fresno vs. UTEP: Need to know

Defender Mystery: Shortly after DeBoer took the job in Washington, star Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener walked into the transfer window. For a moment, it seemed like Haener might be destined to return to Washington, where he began his college career. But Haener withdrew his name from the gate and was able to fight UTEP. However, it is still unclear who the Bulldogs will start taking center stage as Marks has chosen to “keep things in the house.” Choosing to play anyone other than Haener in midfield will give the Bulldogs a good chance of hitting 10 wins, but at least there’s some mystery as to who will play quarterback for Bang Fresno in this game.

Protection of UTEP: UTEP has held off opponents to just 203.7 passes per game this season, but its passing defense will be tested, especially if Haener plays. Fresno State averaged 330.1 yards per game in the air, ranking 9th nationally. Miners have also defended firmly in the red zone, ranking 19th nationally in defense in the red zone. Maintaining success in either of those categories against high-flying Bulldogs will be a challenge. If the Miners can meet it, they have a chance.

New Mexico Bowl History: These shows are no stranger to the New Mexico Bowl. UTEP is making its third appearance in the game and is looking for its first win after Miners lost 52-24 to BYU in 2010 and 21-6 to Wyoming in 2014. Fresno State also lost 0-2 in New Mexico Bowl with a 40-35 loss to Colorado State in 2008 and a 35-28 loss in extra time to Wyoming in 2009.
