Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s Tatyana Ali talks to Will Smith about the Oscars

A family affair. Fresh Prince of Bel Air star Tatyana Ali criticized the former costar Will Smith to clap Chris Rock at the Oscars — but she’s still taking care of her on-screen cousin.

“I am in love [Will Smith] very much,” the former child star, 43, wrote via Twitter on Sunday April 3.”[But] Chris Rock didn’t deserve to be beaten. Period.” Ali added that her “heart aches” over the altercation, explaining that she believes Smith, 53, is still a good person. “I don’t know what caused this chaos and confusion , but I know Will has a big heart. I’ve seen him many times trying his best to do what’s right. I believe in him.”

The singer is the first member of Fresh Prince of Bel Air Cast to comment on the incident.

On Sunday, March 27, Smith slapped Rock, 57, in the face after the comedian made a joke about it Jada Pinkett-Smith – who has alopecia – starring GI Jane 2, a reference to her shaved head. After taking the stage in defense of his 50-year-old wife, the “Gettin’ Jiggy With It” rapper returned to his seat and yelled at Rock to “keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”

When Smith later that night won the Best Actor award for his performance in King Richard, he tearfully apologized for his actions. “I am called in my life to love and protect people and to be a flow for my people,” he said. “I would like to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow candidates… Thank you for this moment. And thank you on behalf of Richard and the entire Williams family. Thanks. I hope the academy will invite me again.”

The next day that Ali The actor issued a public apology to Rock, writing via Instagram: “My behavior at the Oscars last night was unacceptable and inexcusable. … I want to apologize to you publicly, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I’m embarrassed and my actions were no indication of the man I want to be. In a world of love and kindness there is no place for violence.”

Smith’s Post continued, “I also want to apologize to The Academy, the show’s producers, all contestants and all viewers around the world.”

On Monday, March 28, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced it was conducting a formal investigation into the situation. “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith on yesterday’s show,” the Academy said in a statement Monday, March 28, via Variety. “We have officially initiated a formal investigation into the incident and will review further actions and consequences consistent with our statutes, standards of conduct and California law.”

Smith resigned from the academy four days later, announcing that he planned to “fully accept all the consequences of my behavior.”

In a statement to diversitythe Bad Boys star continued, “I deprived other nominees and winners of the opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. My heart is broken. I want to bring the focus back to those who deserve recognition for their accomplishments and allow the Academy to go back to the incredible work they do to support creativity and artistry in film. As such, I resign my membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will accept any further consequences that the board deems appropriate.”

During a stand-up show in Boston on Wednesday, March 30, Rock told the crown he’s “still processing” everything that happened on Oscars night.
