This week’s Baseball Insiders Podcast focused on the MLB rumors as the trade closes a little over a month away.
FanSided’s Mark Carman and Robert Murray sat down Tuesday Baseball Insider Podcast to discuss all things baseball. With the MLB trade deadline a little over a month away, rest assured that the vast majority of conversation has been about it, despite a question about Freddie Freeman dismissal of his agent.
The discussion was so intense that Murray actually had to excuse himself from the podcast during the show to take a call. Despite his best efforts, Carman was only able to extract from his co-host that the call was about a racquet.
But enough about Carm and Bert, you all want to know when the MLB trade deadline is coming up and if your favorite team is buying or selling. So let’s talk about what happened on the latest episode of the Baseball Insiders Podcast.
MLB Rumors: Will the Cardinals Chase A-Starter Frankie Montas?
Note that the St. Louis Cardinals are actively seeking bullpen help at the close. The Cardinals Auxiliary Corps is ranked 12th in all baseball with a 3.65 ERA and are mid-table in almost every category.
However, the St. Louis bullpen ranks near the bottom end of the league in terms of punch outs (251), so they might be targeting a pitcher who knows how to fill the strike zone.
With injury worries surrounding Jack Flaherty, who has just returned to the IL, St. Louis could be in the market as a starter. But don’t expect the Cardinals to target a high-end pitcher like Oakland’s Frankie Montas. The A’s slingshot will require a huge move; one the cards are unlikely to pay for.
MLB Rumors: What Will the NY Mets Do at the Close?
With Pete Alonso being the only “big hitter” in the Mets lineup, don’t be surprised if snagging another power hitter is high on New York’s to-do list. JD Martinez was once considered a candidate for the Big Apple, but with Boston righting the ship that seems unlikely.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported last week that the Mets were targeting Luis Castillo, but they weren’t the only team after the Cincinnati Reds starter. The San Diego Padres and Minnesota Twins were also part of this report.
MLB Rumors: Will the Blue Jays Improve Outfield?
During The Baseball Insiders podcast, two names surfaced as possible trade candidates for the Toronto Blue Jays. Don’t be surprised if outfielders Ian Happ of the Chicago Cubs or Andrew Benintendi of the Kansas City Royals find their way into the Great White North.
Beintindi will charge a lot for it. With Kansas City still in the midst of rebuilding, the Royals will be looking to get as much as they can for their Gold Glove Award-winning left fielder.
MLB Rumors: What Other Cubs Could Be Headed At The Close?
Ian Happ will certainly draw some attention in the trade market, but are there other players on the Chicago Cubs roster that could find new homes before August 2nd? Pitchers Wade Miley, who is currently on the IL, and Kyle Hendricks will be two names to watch.
However, catcher Willson Contreras is perhaps the biggest name moved by the deadline. The San Francisco Giants have been linked with the would-be free agent, and their young catcher and former top pick Joey Bart struggled in 2022.
Quick hits… Joey Gallo’s market, Padres starters on the trading block?
- The New York Yankees would certainly move Joey Gallo before the trade deadline, but his market will be very small.
- The San Diego Padres could be looking to trade one of their starting pitchers with Blake Snell and Mike Clevinger as the likeliest contenders for a move.
- Could the Milwaukee Brewers be on the market as a starter? It is possible. Freddy Peralta is on the 60 Day IL and Brandon Woodruff is just returning from a stint on the Injured List.
- Some other names to keep an eye on at the close are Washington Nationals first baseman Josh Bell, Chicago Cubs substitute David Robertson, and Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder David Peralta.
