NFL legend Frank Gore made his boxing debut Saturday against another newcomer to the sport in former NBA All-Star Deron Williams. And while Gore was used to his more than 16 years of exposure in NFL, he quickly learned the physical demands of combat sports were quite different.
Williams delivered a powerful right-handed punch to Gore’s head in the middle of the match, prompting Gore to give this hilarious, bewildered reaction.
Former San Francisco 49ers great Gore recovered from the punch to cover four laps, but Williams won through split decision. After the fight, Gore explained how things went downhill.
“I let him hit me and I didn’t hit back,” Gore said after the fight on Showtime. “I’m still learning, but that’s what happened. He went on the field, fought hard and got the W.”
Williams – who was a two-time All-NBA pick who has played for the Utah Jazz, Brooklyn Nets, Dallas Mavericks and Cleveland Cavaliers in his 14-year NBA career – said Saturday’s game was the last of his career. A former Texas state champion wrestler, Williams admits he just wanted to prove he can withstand the rigors of the ring.
On the other hand, Gore does not rule out a return to boxing.
“We’ll see,” said Gore, a five-time pro and a member of the 2010 All-Decade team, of the possibility of a comeback. “I had a lot of fun tonight. I’ll go back and talk to my team and see what I have to learn.”
The facial expression after the punch should rank high on Gore’s list.
The battle between Gore-Williams takes place on Jake Paul-Tyron Woodley’s bottom card 2 from Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.
