NEW YORK – That was a fresh start.

Friday saw the start of the home game schedule for Francisco Lindor’s second season with the Mets — and a chance for Lindor and the fan base to celebrate one another in ways they’ve eluded for pretty much all of 2021.

Manager Buck Showalter, along with Lindor and others, had hinted since the spring that the notoriously tough New York crowd basically wants to embrace his team. And the way to the heart of this crowd?

play better

On Friday, Lindor played better, the Mets played better, and the Citi Field crowd savored every moment of a 10-3 opening win at home against the Diamondbacks.

“It’s an electric place on days like this,” Showalter said.

Nobody was more electric than Lindor. He received cheers at pregame introductions and then drew a few more of them with a two-run shot to the right in the fifth inning and a solo shot to the left in the eighth. He had two walks and a steal for his two homers.

“Our fans are waiting to hug him and he gave them something to hug him over,” Showalter said.

“It felt great to be greeted by one of the biggest fan bases out there,” said Lindor. “It’s something special.”

Lindor has three homers in eight games. Last year he needed 27 plays for his second homer and 33 for his third. He didn’t steal a single base until the second week of May. The shortstop combines his numbers a week into this season with his final month of the 2021 campaign and has hit 12 things in his last 36 games – his best power streak since 2018.

“I give myself time to hit. I’m slowing down the game and staying consistent,” he said. Francisco Lindor dominates as Mets make statement in their home opener – The Athletic
