Frances Tiafoe reflects on inspirational friendship with Serena Williams
In a recent interview, US tennis star Frances Tiafoe reflected on what it means to be friends with Serena Williams before announcing her retirement.
After Serena Williams announced her resignation from the tennis world in Vogue, in her own words, using a full-page cover – saying goodbye as only icons can – the tennis world began to work a pitch without Serena.
Of course, Williams made it clear that the US Open will be her last big hooray and US tennis star Frances Tiafoe will celebrate with her.

“I think they’re just iconic in general — I think they have so much crossover. Calling them friends is crazy. Me and Serena now have the same agent and honestly I don’t think I would do what I would if it weren’t for her.
I mean they set such a high precedent. Playing against each other in the Grand Slam final and their whole story, it’s… There were a lot of relatable situations. They built something to make me feel like it was possible and now I’m living up to it.
If I could ever have my name in the same sentence as them both, I’d say I’ve had one heck of a career.”

True, Serena Williams didn’t compete in the Citi Open, which was held July 30-August 7, sis Venus Williams did in her first singles match in over a year.
In 2019, Serena and Frances engaged in a mixed doubles in a “battle of legends‘ against Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic at the Hopman Cup. This June, Serena was gearing up for her Wimbledon return Training with Tiafoe in Ostborn.
Williams, 40, has been a tennis pro for 27 years – longer than Frances has lived. Their dominance in the sport is hard to fathom as Williams has been ranked #1 since July 2002. Serena holds the most combined major titles in singles, doubles and mixed doubles among active players now coming to an end after the US Open.
The US Open runs from August 29th to September 11th and tennis fans can look forward to it more than ever as they watch Serena say goodbye – and witness her friendship with Frances on the courts one last time.
