Foxhole Studio announces Anvil Empires, a persistent war sandbox MMO with battles for a thousand people

if you thought foxhole is a great MMO – which we sure are – and we wish its developers would expand their skills to new environments and then please your eyeballs anvil empires, the next big thing in siege camp. The studio hit Steam yesterday with a new dev blog showcasing the medieval war simulator at scale.

“Anvil Empires is a large-scale conquest game played by thousands in a persistent online world. Players take on the role of an individual citizen and build cities, form empires, and eventually wage war in ages lasting weeks each. Wars are not only won by weapon power, but also by having a strong economy and supply chain to feed and arm armies of players. The conflict is entirely driven by player actions and takes place in an organic world with no safe zones or artificial PvP barriers. While Anvil Empires will share many elements with Foxhole, including a persistent world, sandbox gameplay, mass collaboration, and a “cog in the wheel” player perspective, it will be very different in other areas as well. There will be more emphasis on settlement building, and the conflict will support an order of magnitude more players, allowing up to a thousand players to march side-by-side on the battlefield.”

Yes, they said a thousand players in a single fight, with more spread across the world, but if there’s a 1000-player fight live on your server, you’re probably going to be in it right away anyway. To support those numbers, Siege Camp says it developed a new custom “R2 Engine” (R²Engine) specifically for this game.

The pre-alpha is scheduled to start in April, although the developers emphasize that it’s a real pre-alpha for real testers, not a free-for-all. Interested players should check out the game’s discord, where signup rounds appear to open and close as the studio needs bodies. Note that the pre-alpha runs on Steam and is not paid for testing.

Oh, and don’t worry foxhole. “anvil empires is being developed by a separate department within Siege Camp,” says the team. “The foxhole The team will support and expand Foxhole for many years to come with new features, content and improvements.”
