Fourth Round Teams: Darcy Byrne-Jones and Tom Clurey were out for the Swans clash

The Power have swung the ax after their showdown loss to the Crows and made some sweeping changes, including a former All-Australian’s axe. View the full teams here.

Port Adelaide have issued a selection statement, removing four players, including leading group member Darcy Byrne-Jones, from their 22.

Byrne-Jones has missed just two games since making his AFL-level debut in Round 3 in 2016 – one in 2018 through a club-imposed suspension and one in 2022 after being included in the league’s Covid protocols.

But the 2020 All-Australian and John Cahill medalist was ruled out of power by his 22 for his disheartening trip against Sydney at the SCG.

Byrne-Jones had 27 losses against Brisbane in Round 1, but has since recorded 16 Power losses against Collingwood and Adelaide.

He is one of four players pulled off the 22 by power coach Ken Hinkley as he searches for an answer to the showdown loss and a week in which his position at the club was described as “unsustainable” by Port Adelaide’s only AFL ‘ was awarded to Prime Minister Warren Tredrea, who became Premier League captain.

Along with Byrne-Jones, Tom Clurey, Lachie Jones and Riley Bonner were left out while Orazio Fantasia will miss the Swans clash through a quad strain after being the tactical sub in the showdown.

Byrne-Jones is set to be the tactical backup after being named as a contingency with Clurey, Jones and young, tall Ollie Lord.

Trent McKenzie returns to the Power backline after missing the last two games with an ankle injury.

Pressure forward Jed McEntee and midfielder Jackson Mead were also named.

After making his debut and only appearance for The Power against the Swans in Round 15 of 2021, Dylan Williams was named for his second game.

Williams was initially moved to the backline and then delisted and recast by the Power in late 2022, with a second AFL game capping a notable streak for the 21-year-old.

Adelaide have made two changes to their 22 to build on a good showdown win over Fremantle on Saturday at the Adelaide Oval.

Sam Berry was rested by the Crows and came off the side along with Luke Pedlar after being suspended for a game by Power for his tackle on Dan Houston.

Chayce Jones, who came on against the Power, comes in at 22, as does Ned McHenry, who will play his first AFL game of the season.

Crow’s Head of Football Adam Kelly said McHenry deserved his chance.

“Ned has been in excellent form and has prepared exceptionally well for the 2023 season,” said Kelly.

“He’s always been one of our best players among those who aren’t on the AFL team and he deserves this opportunity to return to the highest level.

“Another with strong form at the SANFL level, Chayce made a real impact when he came on as a sub in last week’s showdown.

“It was really gratifying to see that his hard work was rewarded with a performance that helped our team achieve the desired result.”

Kelly said Berry sustained a calf injury at the showdown and the club has a no-risk policy.

“Sam took a hit to the calf in the showdown which resulted in us taking him out in the third quarter,” Kelly said.

“Although he might be able to get up this weekend, we decided it was best to give Sam a break to ensure he was able to perform at his best, which he has shown throughout pre-season, when he was in excellent form.”

James Borlase, Brayden Cook, Elliott Himmelberg and Harry Schoenberg compete for the role of tactical sub for the Crows.
