Former Steelers DB Ryan Clark has made the argument that Seahawks star Russell Wilson should not be mentioned as a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback.
Russell Wilson’s future with Seahawks Much confusion remains, so prepare for a season full of speculation about where the midfielder might end up.
Sports talk shows that have Wilson musing is not a surprise. But beating him as a quarterback is competitive for the Super Bowls? That’s one of those.
Ryan Clark did it on ESPN’s Get Up show.
Ryan Clark says Russell Wilson is not a great midfielder
“Russell Wilson is a really good footballer. Russell Wilson is a really good midfielder. Russell Wilson is not a great quarterback,” Clark said to open his shady comments.
“Russell Wilson is not the all-time great QB. He will never enter into those conversations. We have to stop putting him in a world where any team with Russell Wilson can win the Super Bowl.”
Clark likened Wilson to Ben Roethlisberger, who DB still thinks is “a better football player”. Roethlisberger won two Super Bowls early in his career but his formula for it was a focus on defense and a strong running game.
Wilson was on a similar trajectory with a Super Bowl win in his sophomore year and nearly another win in his third year. That initial success was followed by steady production, but little to show for it.
“This is not basketball. And frankly, Russell Wilson isn’t all that great. He’s not a human changer for the teams,” Clark said.
Those claims are certainly up for debate, especially after Wilson threw 40 touchdowns in 2020.
Have the Seahawks taken Wilson as far as possible? Or has Seattle stifled Wilson over the past few years?
It is true that Wilson has been much more effective with a strong game in front of him but the same can be said for every midfielder that has ever lived.
Whether Wilson is an “all-time great” or not, there are very few teams in the NFL that can truly say they would be better off without him.
