Former Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez is still searching for his ex-teammate

Christian Vazquez was traded to the Houston Astros by the Boston Red Sox but is still looking for his ex-teammates.

It wasn’t long after the MLB trade deadline before Christian Vazquez was reunited with many of his former Boston Red Sox teammates. Traded a few days ago from Boston to the Houston Astrosthe two clubs battled this week at Vazquez’s new home ground.

In rookie Brayan Bello’s Aug. 3 performance against Houston, it was Vazquez who pulled it off signaled from the Astros shelter that something was wrong with the Red Sox pitcher.

Red Sox skipper Alex Cora saw the same thing, so it’s not like Vazquez forgot what uniform he’s wearing. A catcher with a great reputation as a game caller and teammate, it seems there could always be a Boston reunion this offseason for the soon-to-be vacant agent.

Cora seemed to appreciate that his former player was looking out for the young Boston pitcher. Even if he had plans to ruin Cora’s day with a loss to the Red Sox, he certainly doesn’t want an ex-teammate to get injured because he thinks he can weather another hitter.

Vazquez is already missing from Boston. Especially a teammate seems to miss him very much.

“I don’t want to say that specifically [the Red Sox waved] the white flag, but it was a big step,” Xander Bogaerts told reporters on Tuesday. “[Vázquez] was a big part of the team, but it was at least going in that direction.”

Bogaerts and Vazquez made their debuts with the Red Sox in back-to-back seasons. It was in 2013 that Bogaerts got his first taste of MLB action. Vazquez was first called up in 2014. For several years he was primarily a substitute or draft player while Bogaerts established himself as one of the league’s top shortstops. However, as the backbone of the team, Vazquez could be a general for the team on the field and seems to share the same tendencies at his new club.

In the past few days, Vazquez has gone from a team stuck in the middle and likely too far from a late run to a playoff berth to an organization that has an easy path into the postseason.

It’s actions like this that can help the Astros in small ways. His ability to recognize Bello was hurt, even after only seeing him on the court a handful of times it can do wonders for Houston. Vazquez operates at a different level than some ball players. Catchers are often considered some of the smartest players in the sport. His attention to detail in this situation is something you won’t find on the back of a baseball card.

For the Red Sox, this moment is a reminder that he’s a free agent and likely very open to a 2023 return.
