Former Cub defends Freddie Freeman’s former agent

Former Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs outfielder Dexter Fowler defended Freddie Freeman’s former agent amid allegations by Doug Gottlieb.

A report this week suggested it might Freddie Freeman has split from his agent Casey Close from Excel Sports Management after being annoyed at how free agency negotiations were going. As if the story couldn’t escalate further, Fox Sports Radio’s Doug Gottlieb took to Twitter to claim the reason Freeman moved away from Close was because he was never told him about Atlanta’s last offer and that the first baseman recently found out about it.

Gottlieb’s allegations were denied by Close and Excel Sports Management. Former Chicago Cubs outfielder Dexter Fowler also defended Close on Twitter, saying he’s “always been honest and open.”

Regarding the statement in question, Close said that he and Excel are “immediately exploring all legal avenues to address the reckless release of inaccurate information” from Gottlieb.

This offseason’s negotiations between Freeman and the Braves have been among the top stories of the hot stove season. Freeman wanted a six-year engagement from Atlanta, but they were only willing to go five years.

The Braves showed they’ve progressed by acquiring Matt Olson from the Oakland Athletics to effectively replace Freeman. An eight-year deal worth $168 million cemented him. Freeman, on the other hand, signed a six-year, $162 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Freeman returned to Atlanta last weekend as a member of the opposing team, and he was constantly overwhelmed by emotions.

It didn’t take Close long to call Gottlieb about his claims, and he got support from Fowler. Former Cub defends Freddie Freeman’s former agent
