Football player dies after sustaining head injury last week

Max Engle died Friday, more than a week after a head injury he sustained in a high school football game.
The 17 year old Engle suffered the head injury on September 8th when playing for Jersey Shore High School (Pennsylvania) vs. Selinsgrove High School (Pennsylvania).
The Engle School District shared a social media post from the family on Saturday informing the Jersey Shore community of his death:
“First, we would like to express our deep gratitude and appreciation for the love and support we have shown our family during this difficult time. The many thoughts and prayers were a great comfort to us during this time. Max fought hard this week, but he had to keep going to achieve a bigger goal. On Friday, September 15, he joined the Lord and those who loved him and had gone before him. Please know that he felt all your love and prayers.
“Throughout his life he tried to bring people together. We feel like he brought people together during this time of uncertainty. We believe he smiles proudly at this union of community. The generous gifts you have given to our family will be used to honor Max and spread a message of togetherness, community and love.”
Late in the game against Selinsgrove, Engle returned to the field after a timeout. As he entered the field he collapsed.
