Flight instructor killed in plane crash after student pilot made tragic mistake

A young flight instructor who dreams of becoming a pilot died when her student’s light plane crashed in the United States.

Viktoria Theresie Izabelle Ljungman, 23, of Virginia, was with two students aboard the single-engine Cessna 172 last Thursday when it crashed shortly after takeoff from Newport News-Williamsburg Airport.

Her student Oluwagbohunmi Ayomide Oyebode, 18, was piloting the plane, Virginia State Police said.

During takeoff, Oyebode attempted to pull the vehicle up at too steep an angle.

As a result, the engine stalled in the air and the plane crashed.

It had reached a height of about 30m.

Oyebode, from Maryland, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital.

Another 18-year-old male student who was on board was also taken to a hospital.

Ljungman, a Swedish citizen, graduated from Hampton University, according to the Daily Press.

She taught at Rick Aviation after earning her commercial pilot license in March 2021 and becoming a certified flight instructor in April 2022, according to her Instagram account, where she documented her journey to becoming a pilot.

Ljungman’s family said they were “devastated by this tremendous loss”.

“Knowing Victoria was loving her, and not just for her family,” a statement from her family released through the read, reported WTVR.

“Everyone who dealt with Viktoria admired her kindness and intelligence and respected her tremendous dedication and work ethic.

Charlie Hudson, who met Ljungman at university, said she was a “pure soul”.

“I can’t remember her ever not smiling,” Hudson told the Daily Press.

“She was just infectious in her energy, just nice to be here.”

In other tributes on her Instagram page, friends remembered the 23-year-old as a “beautiful, talented” person.

“The sweetest soul I’ve met in Hampton,” one person wrote.

“I pray that your next journey is one of peace and light. Keep flying,” said another person.
