Five shot, suspect killed in Toronto condo shootout

Five people were killed in a shooting at a condo in suburban Toronto on Sunday night, police said.

Around 7:20 p.m. local time officials responded to an active call to shoot at the building in Vaughan, a town north of Toronto, York Area Police Chief Jim MacSween said in a news conference.

Police found a “horrific scene in which numerous victims died,” MacSween said.

The male gunman was shot by an officer during a confrontation and died, the chief said.

Police have not released the shooter’s name.

Police will not publicly name the victims until their families are notified of their deaths, MacSween said.

Constable Laura Nicolle told CNN the incident was the “most terrifying phone call I’ve seen in my entire career.”

She said in an earlier news conference it appeared the victims came from more than one condominium.

Residents were evacuated from the building for hours while emergency responders made sure there were no other casualties.

The suspect’s motive was not released and police did not say what led to the shooting.

The authorities assume that the threat to the community no longer existed.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the victims and their families,” MacSween said.

York Regional Police Homicide Unit will continue to investigate the shooting, MacSween said.
