Fire police start to be busy until 2022

AUGUST – It was a busy start to the year for the State Fire Police Office.

So far, the agency has recorded three deadly fires out of 57 fires it has investigated this year, State Fire Police Joe Thomas said.

In addition, some of them have burn victims.

This is leading to an overworked staff, says Thomas.

Currently, the room has 1 lieutenant, 3 sergeants and 12 investigators along with the fire police.

“The amount of personal work everyone is doing right now is impressive and exhausting,” he said.

“I would love to have a level of staff where paying for everyone, whether inspectors or investigators, is manageable,” he said.

Thomas said that based on his conversations with fire chiefs across the state, Maine is noticing trends that continue into 2021.

He said the two biggest causes of fires were related to heating and cooking, and many more occurred during the day with more people at home.

Thomas said last year the state fire governor’s office received about 130,000 fire alarm calls, with a significant number of deaths reported. Fire police start to be busy until 2022
