Final Fantasy 16 producer tries to pet a dog but attacks it instead

We still have a few months left the action-heavy Final Fantasy XVI will be released on June 22nd for PlayStation 5. And in preparation for the RPG’s upcoming release, Square Enix continues to reveal more of the game’s various elements, from gameplay and cutscenes to characters and Eikon fights. While we knew you could pet new furry companion Torgal, producer Naoki Yoshida left fans horrified at his failed attempt to show love to the wolf pal.

The 16th mainline entry in the long-running action-RPG franchise, FFXVI sees the protagonist Clive Rosfield seeking revenge on the bastards who killed his brother and destroyed his kingdom. In typical fantasy action-adventure fashion, you’ll use a variety of spells and sword attacks to bury the evildoers you encounter on your vengeful path. But Clive is not alone in his quest for vengeance, as he is joined by a rotating group of AI-controlled companions who can team up with him against enemies. Torgal is one of them. Unfortunately, in a gameplay demonstration at PAX East, Yoshida built Mist and attacked Torgal when he was just trying to pet the adorable and fluffy wolf partner.

No, you cannot kill the torgal

Square Enix hosted one FFXVI panel during the last weekend PAX East convention. Titled “Yes, you can pet the torgal“, the hour-long discussion was about more than just the wolf. There were segments about the characters and the world, gameplay sequences in multiple locations, and breakdowns where moments in the game were fast-paced events, as well as the promise of more RPG elements being shown in April. Hidden in chat, Yoshida tried to prove that the panel’s title was correct, that Torgal could actually be petted. However, in an attempt to show Torgal some love, Yoshida drew Clive’s large, flaming sword and attacked the cute pup, to the utter horror of the crowd.

With a Torgal plushie on his lap and the DualSense in his hands, Yoshida led Clive to the wolf companion and attempted to press X to interact. Instead, Yoshida put Clive on the offensive and got him swinging his sword at the wolf. The crowd screamed. Localization director Michael-Christopher Koji Fox punched Yoshida in the right arm. Yoshida apologized. It was a devastating moment. Thankfully, Torgal, the nimble pup that he is, dodged Clive’s sword slash.

“Can you kill the Torgal?” Fox asked. “No, pet.”

Yoshida admitted he pushed the wrong button and finally showed that Clive can not only pet Torgal but also give treats to the wolf. Which is good, especially considering how much of a good boy Torgal is in the game combining enemies at the touch of a button. He deserves treats.

While much remains to be seen Final Fantasy XVI, at least now we know you can’t kill Torgal. I don’t know who would even want to do this. Torgal is such a sweet, good, sweet boy who shouldn’t be given anything but love. I will protect him with my life, so hold back! Don’t even try to attack him, Yoshida.
