Via Jeff Aaron: Athlete Nisse Sauerland is in talks about a bout he hopes will be the IBF heavyweight title elimination between Filip ‘El Animal’ Hrgovic and Zhilei Zhang.
The 29-year-old Hrgovic (14-0, 12 KOs) and his fans are frustrated at the slowness of reaching the world title after the Croatian 6’6 ″ won bronze. at the 2016 Olympics.
One HUGE problem Sauerland and Hrgovic had was that there was an IBF heavyweight fight scheduled for January 1 between the former IBF champion Charles Martin (28-2-1, 25 KOs) and two-time world champion Luis ‘King Kong’ Ortiz (32-2, 27 KOs) at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Hollywood, Florida.
Given that the showdown between ‘Crown Prince Charles’ Martin and ‘King Kong’ Ortiz has been set to rule out the IBF title, it appears that Hrgovic’s fight with China’s two-time athlete Zhang (23-0- 1, 18 KOs ) would need to be a secondary IBF title eliminator if approved by the International Boxing Federation.
In that case, the contest winner Hrgovic vs. Zhang may have to wait until 2023 or 2024 before they get the title. The great news for Hrgovic is that he will still be young two years from now, as he will be 31 and probably still in his prime.
“We went through the IBF list twice. We offered everyone in the top 10, then the top 10, the fight,” promoter Nisse Sauerland told Sports sky about his efforts to make Hrgovic a contender for an IBF heavyweight title remover.
“We are ready for ‘Big Bang’ Zhang, and he will meet a pent-up angry Croatian fighter. If Zhang is ready and ready? We will do that. People are crowding Hrgovic and won’t fight him,” said Hrgovic’s Sauerland.
Hrgovic turned pro in 2017, and he and his promoters at Sauerland believe he is ready to compete in an IBF title elimination competition.
It will be a bit frustrating for Hrgovic because he wants a quick express ride to the world title we saw with Anthony Joshua following his 2012 Olympic gold medal win.
After turning pro in 2013, Joshua promoter Eddie Hearn helped him secure a world title title in his third year at pro against then-IBF champion Charles Martin. in 2016. Hrgovic had no luck winning the title, and you could argue that the lack of a massive fan base has hampered his efforts.
Had Hrgovic been as popular as Joshua, he might have had a chance to fight for a world title.
Unfortunately, Hrgovic had a problem with opponents willing to rush forward to face him. Michael Hunter was mentioned as a possibility, but the fight didn’t materialize.
Last Saturday, Hrgovic stopped Emir Ahmatovic in the third round with the bottom cards of Devin Haney and Joseph ‘Jojo’ Diaz Jr. at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Hrgovic dropped Ahmatovic three separate times before the competition halted.
Seven-year professional Zhang is on the verge of a second-round knockout win over Craig Lewis on November 27 at Madison Square Garden in New York in a loss to Teofimo Lopez vs. George Kambosos on DAZN.
