FIFA 23 brings cross-play, women’s club football, PC parity with PS5 and Xbox

EA Sports and FIFA are parting ways after this year, but EA Vancouver developers are promising fans will experience a passionate final dance FIFA 23which the studio calls the greatest football game it has ever built.

for starters, FIFA 23 will deliver the long-awaited – and in the eyes of many, overdue – cross-platform multiplayer, with some limitations at first. EA Sports confirmed that a new matchmaking ecosystem was being tested this spring fifa 22, will be available at launch. Players will also, for the first time, receive both the World Cup (starting November 21st) and the Women’s World Cup (starting 20th July 2023) in the same game with the branding, national teams and players of those tournaments.

Women’s professional club football makes its debut in FIFA 23, seven years after women’s national teams joined the soccer sim in its tournament and one-off Play Now modes. Perhaps most importantly, Windows PC gamers will now get a game updated to the engine that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X users have been playing with since 2020.

“This is our last FIFA title game in a rich 30-year history,” producer Matt LaFreniere said in a closed presentation last week. “That’s why we know it has to be something special.”

For starters, there is some fine print about cross-platform play. The older PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles can play with the newer members of their console family as well as each other. “FIFA is a long time coming and we know our players have been waiting for it,” said LaFreniere.

Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC can play with each other (as well as the older members of their platform type). Cross-play expansion will speed up matchmaking time, LaFreniere said; further: “We are already looking into expanding our cross-play capabilities in the future.”

FIFA 23 Feature parity on PC comes two years after the launch of the current generation of PlayStation and Xbox consoles, on the same schedule as fifa 16 when it delivered PC parity two years after the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 debuted. All of this is packaged into a new presentation layer and gameplay animation toolkit that the studio is calling HyperMotion 2. This will extend the work started fifa 22which provided motion-captured animations of full-length 11-on-11 football matches played by professionals and recorded by EA Sports Vancouver developers.

HyperMotion 2, which EA Sports will discuss in detail later, will bring an additional 6,000 animations to the game, a marketing cue that lifelong sports game fans have mostly turned off. Sam Rivera, an EA Canada Producer, said additional mo-cap sessions as well as new machine learning will impact player behavior in even more noticeable ways. The interactions of goalkeepers with the ball and defenders during set piece shots on goal were presented as examples of HyperMotion’s newly developed technology.

FIFA 23 Coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X this fall.
