Fiat 500e EV receives four-star ANCAP rating – in New Zealand

The Fiat 500e, which is said to be the Italian brand’s first electric vehicle in Australia, didn’t earn five stars in ANCAP tests.

The electric city car has received a four-star rating, with ratings of 78 percent for adult occupant protection, 79 percent for child occupant protection and 67 percent for safety assistant.

In the respective categories, 80 percent, 80 percent and 70 percent are required for a vehicle to receive five stars.

ANCAP demonstrated marginal performance for the driver’s chest protector in the frontal offset test and for the driver’s and passenger’s chests in the full-width frontal test. It gave the 500e a poor score for chest protection on a 10 year old dummy in the side impact test.

The safety agency also noted that during the crossbar test on the other side, due to the lack of a center airbag, front seat occupants moved through the cabin (referred to as “deflection”), “with a significant risk of head contact with the intruding door.” ā€œ.

As such, the 500e gets moderate and poor reviews for spike avoidance.

Fiat has yet to confirm local 500e specs ahead of its launch in the first half of 2023, but in New Zealand it comes standard with autonomous emergency braking, driver fatigue monitoring and lane departure warning.

The 500e is also available with adaptive cruise control and lane centering.

Five stars have become the norm in ANCAP testing, with only a handful of vehicles not receiving all five under the expiring 2020-22 testing protocols.

These included the zero-star Mitsubishi Express, the four-star Citroen C4 (and related Opel Mokka in New Zealand), and the four-star Hyundai Palisade, which was later retested and received five stars.
