The goal of this weekly series is to identify players in each slot available in free agency in at least a third of ESPN’s tournaments. Some nominees are experts capable of assisting in one or two categories, while others provide more diverse and important statistical services. In the breakdown below, I’ve sorted the players in each position by acquisition preference, rather than their percentage of roster in ESPN’s leagues.

Protect points

Alec Burks, New York Knicks (Participated in 27.4% of ESPN tournaments): Earning Tom Thibodeau’s trust could prove to be quite an imaginary value, as the coach is known for manipulating his core players in the big minutes. Burks’ recent change to the starting lineup has added 18.8 PPG with high shoot and steal rates.

Josh Giddey, Oklahoma City Thunder (44.2%): Due to return to the ring for the Thunder on Monday, Giddey will continue to flirt with the triple production as one of the main creators for the young Oklahoma City roster.

Jalen Brunson, Dallas Mavericks (36.8%): With at least 15 points in 12 of his last 15 games, Brunson has emerged as a steady additional goalscorer for Dallas. Jason Kidd trusts Brunson to command the second unit and this Villanova production will become a legit fantasy whenever Luka Doncic pushed aside.

Guard

Kevin Porter Jr., Houston Rockets (61.2%): A thigh injury has kept Porter off the field for several of Houston’s past games, but the third-year combo guard will soon return to the team’s lead creative role. In a league rife with heliocentric players, it’s become harder to find support in the fictional freelance company, making Porter an underrated pick.

Desmond Bane, Memphis Grizzlies (36.1%): One of nine players in the top 40 in 3-point attempts this season has sunk at least 40% of his attempts from outside the arc, Bane has 42.1% of his career from deep and currently enjoying a breakout second season thanks to significant leaps in minutes and touches this season.

Small progress

Gary Trent Jr., Toronto Raptors (66.0%): 3-and-D wing is currently fifth in total steals and fourth in glides per game, this worm wing is also one of the 33 players who have earned at least 150 3-pointers in the calendar presented on Sunday.

Jae’Sean Tate, Houston Rockets (27.4%): It’s likely that Tate could prove more valuable as an imaginary pick than even Trent among this week’s relinquish wings. After all, Tate has been somewhat prolific lately, earning 19.5 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 6.0 APG, 1.5 SPG and 1.5 BPG in his last four games entering Sunday . While loading his score will decrease once Jalen Green and Porter are good at dribbling, Tate’s ability to assist others in attack and create chaos in defence proves reliable.

Dillon Brooks, Memphis Grizzlies (33.8%): You would think that the absence of Ja Morant would inspire a goal spike for Brooks, but he’s been somewhat quiet in that department in recent games. Digging deeper shows that Brooks claims a staggering 32.6% utilization rate when Morant leaves the floor this season, proof that Brooks will soon be filling the bucket.

Power transition

Aaron Gordon, Denver Nuggets (47.6%): You’ll need to skip some quiet scoring from Gordon, but the increased chance odds on Denver’s roster are really needed to inspire some hilarious fantasy dialogue. In Saturday’s win over the Knicks, for example, Gordon wasn’t really effective on offense but combined four combined steals and blocks.

Lauri Markkanen, Cleveland Cavaliers (51.4%): Even if fitting sometimes becomes difficult in an oversized Cleveland facade, Markkanen enjoys a rare shooting freedom as residents stretch widely for the Cavaliers. The role has earned him at least seven 3-point attempts in six of the last seven games into Sunday’s standings.

Marvin Bagley III, Sacramento Kings (37.5%): Will Bagley ever really prove effective consistently with the Kings? That’s unlikely, but a new trainer lens could unlock more minutes and production for Bagley in the coming weeks.

Bobby Portis, Milwaukee Bucks (59.3%): The signing DeMarcus Cousins in response to the loss of Brook Lopez may speak to the team’s potential need for size in the knockout stages, but also show the huge role Portis will play for the rest of the season. Portis is currently one of only nine NBA players to average at least 15 points, eight rebounds, and at least 0.8 blocks and 0.8 steals per game. Are these somewhat arbitrary endpoints? Of course, but they also say that it is rare to find a player who regularly hits the double with such a respectable defensive ratio.

PJ Washington, Charlotte Hornets (62.8%): If the league tends to lean towards small-ball squads, why not fantasy squads? Washington has recently thrived as the group’s main stress center, enjoying more rim protection and recovery opportunities in addition to proving the heat from the arc over the past week.
