Fantastic Beasts 3 conjures up $6 million at the Thursday box office

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is back on screens due to the fork Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, but it doesn’t receive the love that fans originally lavished on the series. Thursday night previews for the third entry under the Fantastic Beasts Banner raked in a solid $6 million at the box office at over 3,350 locations across the country. The return of Jew law‘s Albus Dumbledore is expected to gross around $45-50 million over the Easter holiday weekend, with the film being released in over 40 territories simultaneously.

So far the film has settled in with mediocre reviews from critics, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a score of 51%, but the damage to this film’s chances was done long before it even hit theaters. The original trip to the Fantastic Beasts The franchise was well-received by moviegoers in 2016, but Warner Bros. backed down on the awful Grindelwald’s crimes in 2018, which put serious pressure on the next film to improve. The Secrets of Dumbledore has at least corrected the course somewhat that the previous entry so universally hated, but it has made no financial difference. Both of its predecessors significantly topped it in previews, earning $8.75 million and $7.3 million, respectively. Add the ongoing controversy surrounding the series creator JK Rowlingand it was clear from the start that this was not going to be a tentpole production.

The Secrets of Dumbledore also had a notable casting shock that clouded his future Mads Mikkelsen Assuming the role of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald as the original actor Johnny Depp faces worrying allegations of domestic violence. With the franchise collapsing, it’s unclear where Warner Bros. will be headed next as they previously had five films planned in the franchise. At least they reworked this film to be more in favor of the fans, with more spotlight on Dumbledore and Grindelwald. But falling yields and a less palatable reception bode ill for the future. With COVID-19 also affecting international markets, it will be difficult for the film to even sniff the first entry’s $814 million worldwide.

This latest film works towards the inevitable battle between Dumbledore and Grindelwald. Banned from fighting the evil wizard directly, Dumbledore enlists the help of Newt Scamander and a team of wizards, witches and a muggle baker to travel the world and take down the powerful beasts and followers of Grindelwald. However, things are beginning to heat up to the point where Dumbledore can’t afford to sit around any longer.

The Secrets of Dumbledore was once again judged by Harry Potter veteran David Yates with Rowling sharing with writing assignments for the first time Steven Kloves. Join Law and Mikkelsen in this latest wizarding adventure Eddie Redmayne, Ezra Miller, Dan Foegler, Alison Sudol, William Nadylam, Callum Turner, Jessica Williams, Victoria Yeates, Catherine Waterston, Maria Fernanda Candido, Richard Coyle, Oliver Masucci, Poppy Corby Teuch, Fiona Glascott and Valerie Pacner.
