Fans Throw Back the Cody Rhodes, Rhodes Weighing Belt Teases Turn Heels?

Cody Rhodes teamed up with PAC and Lucha Brothers against Malakai Black, Andrade El Idolo and FTR in the main event of AEW tonight Gunpowder.

At one point, Rhodes threw his trademark weight belt out into the Chicago crowd, but it ended up back in the ring seconds later. The rebellion attracted a large audience as seen in the video below.

Andrade flipped the belt and threw it on the floor to regain focus for the match. However, at some point, the belt went back to Cody Rhodes and he wore it around his belt. He then threw it out again, though it’s unclear exactly where it went. This time it didn’t come back again.

Andrade ended up pinning to the PAC to take home his team’s victory, and the show ended shortly after.

Once broadcast, Rhodes teases going through the heel tunnel (left side) as he walks backwards.

Attention AEW Chairman Tony Khan parallel implementation earlier this month between Cody Rhodes and John Cena because both are polarizing characters. Fans will remember when Cena toss the shirt in front of the crowd at ECW One Night Stand 2006, just because it kept getting thrown back.

“For a long time there was no reaction against the intention. I’ve known what this reaction is for a long time, and I think it’s very polarizing,” says Khan. “It’s not all one-sided. I think it’s a mix of the crowd and it’s a lot like John in terms of how you hear segregation, and there’s a lot of women and kids who are huge fans and some booing dudes, but people still actually buy Cody . And in the right moments, they cheered him on. And we saw that when he saved PAC from Malakai and Andrade.

“There was a big song about Cody, and in that context, people were really excited to see him, and the truth is I really think people really like Cody. When John Cena was a full-time wrestler, he was one of the greatest wrestling stars of all time and people really enjoyed seeing him, too. And, of course, over time, that response has generally become more positive, but obviously, people are just getting more and more interested in John Cena. So I really think people are very emotionally invested in Cody in one way or another, which is a very good thing. ”
