During the tribute, singer Jade Novah performed Hilson’s most popular single, “Pretty Girls Rock.” Atlanta native Dondria also took the stage to perform fan favorite “Turnin Me On.” For those who listen to Hilson’s music occasionally, the tribute seemingly came out of left field, leaving many stunned.

“A Keri Hilson WHAT,” wrote one person who was completely shocked by the honor.

Another person made the snide comment “Must have been a quick tribute”.

As the singer became a trending topic on social media, her aforementioned fan base was quick to remind people that Hilson has a long track record of hits under her belt. The Decatur, Georgia native rarely talks about the top artists she’s written records for, but the list goes on. By Justin Timberlake, Usher, Ludacris, Kelly Rowland and Mary J. Blige to name a few.

“Keri Hilson may only have released 2 albums but she has written many hits for some of our favorite artists and has been in the industry for over 10 years. why not celebrate our black women in music?!?!?” wrote another fan.

Another person called out the lack of solidarity from those who downplayed Hilson’s performance. “Are you mad that Keri Hilson is getting a tribute? What happened to supporting black women? Smh, I hope Lil Mo gets a Lifetime Achievement Award next.”

From time to time, Hilson mentions on social media that he’s working on new music. Hilson’s last studio album, No Boys Allowed, was released in 2010. For fans who have been waiting a bit patiently for over a decade, the drop can’t come soon enough.

“I want my fans to know that I’m going back to music,” Hilson told Forbes earlier this year. “That’s in my plan; that is my wish. It’s a deep desire and there are things I want to do in this base when the time feels right.” Fans of Keri Hilson come to her defense after tribute sparked debate over her music contributions
