Fans confused as Tigers swing ax with ‘insane’ delisting: ‘Huge mistake’

Sydney Stack is among four Richmond roster changes announced on Thursday.

Stack has not been offered further contact, nor has former No. 20 pick Riley Collier-Dawkins, Jake Aarts or Will Martyn.

After earning a spot on the Tigers’ roster as an additional signing ahead of the 2019 season, Stack made an immediate impression, playing 17 games in his debut season.

He won the Cosgrove-Jenkins award for Richmond’s top first-year player and was a Premiership player for Richmond VFL.

He struggled with injuries and misconduct in a 2020 campaign in which he only made nine appearances and has only played nine more times at the AFL level since.

Aarts managed 42 top-level games, including seven in 2022, but Collier-Dawkins has only played in two senior games since his call-up in 2018.

Martyn played three games for Richmond.

Richmond’s general manager of football talent Blair Hartley thanked all players for their contributions to the club.

“We appreciate the hard work and dedication that Jake, Sydney, Will and Riley have brought to us over a number of years,” he said.

“Everyone has played their part in our recent success and we wish them all the best in the future.”

Richmond fans were quick to voice their disappointment over the call to Stack.

“Cutting Stack is insane. No chance of a pick being 60 more,” wrote one fan.

“Surely Stack gets another try at the AFL level,” said another.

“Big mistake not re-signing Sydney Stack!” said another.

Last day of AFL trades.
