Fan video of Myles Straw’s confrontation with Yankees supporters

This is how the confrontation between Cleveland Guardians outfielder Myles Straw and New York Yankees fans looked from the stands.

The embarrassment that unfolded at Yankee Stadium on Saturday night was given a little more context with the advent of videos in the stands.

In case you missed the uproar, Yankees fans got into verbal confrontations and threw trash at Guardians outfielders before and after New York hit a walk-off to win the game.

At one point, Myles Straw even jumped up to get closer to the fans trolling from the stands. Now we know how it looked from the fans’ point of view.

Cleveland’s Steven Kwan hit the outfield wall hard while trying to make a play late in the ninth inning and had to be tended to by the coaches. While he was being looked after, fans berated the player and other outfield players who gathered to check on him.

As Oscar Mercado and Straw approached them, things escalated.

Later, after Gleyber Torres made his walk-off, fans in another part of the outfield began throwing trash towards the Mercado. Trash was soon raining down on the Guardians players and umpires who came out to put a stop to it. Even Yankees players like Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton ran to the outfield to tell fans to call it off.

It’s a shame that what should have been a celebratory moment for the Yankees turned into something so ugly.

The new angle helps our understanding of what happened, but unfortunately it doesn’t correct the behavior of the people in the stands. Now New York had to take additional measures to prevent Guardians players from experiencing more abuse.
