Fake Chevron Ad by Adam McKay provokes climate change

Adam McKay dealt a viciously satirical blow to Chevron by scripting a fake ad posted online blasting the oil giant for putting profits over the future of the planet.

The writer, producer and director posted the fake Chevron ad on Twitter on Thursday, where it has already garnered more than 4.2 million views. He gave no indication that it was satire, innocently asking in a tweet, “Has anyone seen that Chevron commercial?”

Featuring generic stock footage typical of Madison Avenue-branded campaigns and an uplifting orchestral soundtrack, the fake Chevron ad says the greenhouse gases released by Chevron’s products “are turning the planet right this second into a hellish George Miller movie.” Transform” – which refers to the Australian filmmaker’s apocalyptic “Mad Max” films.

“At the end of the day, at Chevron, we don’t give a damn about you, your weird kids, or your stupid dog,” says the narrator of the 100-second clip. The ending card in the fake spot clarifies the message, showing the chevron logo next to the text: “We don’t give a fuck about you.”

The ad, the narrator says, is designed to “lull you into a catatonic state that makes you forget a singular fact: Chevron actively murders you every day.”

While McKay’s ad targets Chevron, the narrator ends by saying that “this commercial applies equally” to Exxon, BP, Shell, and “any hacker politician who trades the future of life on this planet for dirty money in oil stocks.”

The video produced by McKay’s Hyperobject Industries Shingle was Quote tweet on Friday from actor Mark Ruffalo, who has also been outspoken about the urgent need to address climate change. “Guys. I’ve finally been won over by Chevron…You won’t believe how moving this commercial is,” Ruffalo wrote.

Last week, the Climate Emergency Fund announced that McKay had pledged $4 million to the nonprofit — his largest ever personal donation to any issue (and the largest personal donation in the history of the Climate Emergency Fund). He also joined the fund’s board of directors. In support of McKay’s donation, producer, philanthropist and activist Abigail Disney will announce a $200,000 pledge to the Climate Emergency Fund.

McKay’s films include Anchorman, The Big Short, Vice and last year’s Don’t Look Up for Netflix. Among upcoming projects, Hyperobject Industries is on board to produce a screen adaptation of Elaine Hsieh Chou’s satirical novel Disorientation for Apple TV+ in conjunction with Malala Yousafzai’s after-school production banner.
