F1 Fans Compare Lewis Hamilton’s controversial finish to Bret Hart & The Montreal Screwjob

For fans of professional wrestling, the infamous Montreal Screwjob has gone down in history as one of the most malevolent things a wrestling promoter can do. Of course, it’s all very detailed in the documentary, Hitman Hart: Wrestling With Shadows, but it has since become an industry legend for good reason.

If you can remember, Bret Hart was a WWF Champion at the time, but left the company for WCW. Vince McMahon stated at the time that he was in financial danger and could no longer use Hitman. Bret was promised he could keep the title until the next night on Raw, where he would hand the title back.

It was during a match between him and Shawn Michaels at the 1997 Survivor Series in Montreal, Quebec. In the end, however, he was betrayed, with McMahon calling the bell himself before the match could be properly concluded. Hart is being kept by Michaels in his own Sharpshooter filing and is essentially never being exploited.

The rest, as they say, is history, and while I apologize for using a cliché, I am now forced to use another: History repeats itself, it seems. Under similar circumstances, it appears Lewis Hamilton was tricked into losing his win in the same way at the F1 final held at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

During the race and due to a collision between Williams ‘Nicholas Latifi and Haas’ Mick Schumacher, Hamilton was forced to end the race with bad tyres, he was unable to enter the pit because of a virtual safety car call. He was basically stuck. In the final lap, the controversy hit the F1 world the same way it did to the professional wrestling world in 1997.

The track control system allowed the cars to overtake the car safely and Verstappen, who at the time was second only to Hamilton, and that’s when Verstappen passed and there were still people screaming in pain (fans) Hamilton’s grave). All this caused an uproar on social networks, many people joined the discussion.

One Twitter user said: “I feel this is the F1 equivalent of the infamous ‘Montreal Screwjob’. It is full of manipulation. I was hoping to make a small fortune in a race weekend next year, but can’t see how I’m going to do this after what we’ve seen. #corrupt

Another said: “So how it really bothers me all night @fia destroyed Lewis’ season yesterday. i have seen a @WWE compare how it has been ‘planned’ so far. So I guess WWE means ‘The Montreal Screwjob’ @ F1 had ‘The Abu Dhabi Screwjob'”

Fans basically feel, and quite obviously do, that Hamilton has been robbed of his win, so make the comparison above. Verstappen won his first world title in the… a win that will probably forever be in controversy, like the Montreal Screwjob.
