F1 Cars at Bathurst: Red Bull Formula 1 car sings the national anthem before scorching around Mount Panorama

Motorsport fans were treated to a special display at the Bathurst 12 Hour, with a Red Bull F1 car performing the national anthem before scorching around Mount Panorama on Saturday.

Fans gathered to hear Advance Australia Fair’s unique performance before Red Bull junior driver Liam Lawson drove the 2011 model RB7 around the famous circuit.

But fans were also a bit disappointed that Lawson didn’t attempt a new lap record.

There was talk of the 20-year-old attempting to break Jenson Button’s record set in 2011 when he drove his McLaren around the track in a time of 1m48s.

And although there was no attempt at a record, it is believed Lawson could have completed the 6.2km distance in 1:30 seconds.

Still, the Kiwi said it was one of the best experiences of his life.

“That was probably the coolest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” he said.

“It was really, really cool.

“I did a lap in the safety car this morning to keep an eye on this place. Doing that in a Formula 1 car is completely insane.

“To be honest, I was so nervous on the first lap, but after that it felt really good.

“It’s totally flat during the chase, braking at 120, 130 metres. The car handled the bumps really well. When we got to the top it was really quick.

“That’s what’s special [I’ve done]. Completing an official F1 session, a free practice session last year, is the greatest achievement I’ve ever had. But to do something like that in a car that I watched as a kid is special.

“Pure fun. It was cool.”

Lawson is Red Bull’s third driver behind Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez for the 2023 season.

Saturday’s demonstration between qualifying sessions came a day after a horrific fall during practice.

Keith Kassulke’s MARC II V8 was turned upside down after leaving the Mount Panorama track at The Chase and crashing into the barriers midway through the session.

In a statement, Supercars officials said Kassulke, who was taken to the medical center for evaluation, was “conscious throughout, communicated with the rescue teams and sustained no major injuries.”
