Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore believes the Ballon d’Or ‘really needs a look’ after Mo Salah finished seventh and Lionel Messi won the award for the seventh time.
The prestigious award has been heavily criticized recently, with many arguing that Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski deserves the award this year.
“It’s absurd,” the 50-year-old told Empire of the Kop.
“I think the Ballon d’Or should be for the best player of the last season. There’s no way you can tell it’s Cristiano Ronaldo, you definitely can’t say it’s Lionel Messi.
“You look at what Robert Lewandowski has done in the Bundesliga and he continues to set extremely high goals in terms of goals.”
The former Reds player believes one of Liverpool’s stars deserves the title for his impressive performances.
“Scoring goals, plus entertainment, plus scoring important goals in important games, goals that determine victory, obviously has to be Mo Salah.
“You can’t honestly tell me from what Lionel Messi has done or hasn’t done so far in Paris, and has done or hasn’t done in his final days at Barcelona, that it fits the bill. matches what Mo Salah did with a Liverpool shirt.
“Because the simple answer is… it doesn’t.”
It’s hard to refute Collymore’s claim as Mo has scored a lot of match-fixing goals and has single-handedly beat us in past matches.
