Everything Bill Self said after the Jayhawks made it to Final Four

Bill Self led his fifth Kansas Jayhawks basketball team to the Final Four.

A great second-half effort pushed Bill Self’s Kansas Jayhawks past the Miami Hurricanes and into the Finals.

Kansas is the only No. 1 seed to feature in the Finals in New Orleans next weekend. This will be the fifth time the Jayhawks have reached the national semifinals under Self’s watch, which ties him to Roy Williams in the four most Finals appearances in Jayhawks show history. This will be Kansas’ 16th trip to the Quarterfinals in their history as a basketball blood.

Here’s what Coach Self had to say after beating Miami in Chicago to qualify for the Midwest Regional Finals.

“It was about time we were able to play the second half, and these guys won it,” Self said.

As fate would have it, the last time Kansas made it to Round 4 of the Finals, they faced the same team they would face on Saturday: the Villanova Wildcats.

Kansas lost to the 2018 Villanova team that beat Michigan in the national championship. It was the Wildcats’ second national title in three years. This is also their first trip back to the Finals since the college 2018 season.

Bill Self cuts the net after reaching another Final

While much of the college basketball world will be paying attention to what’s going on on the other side of the bracket (Duke vs. North Carolina / Saint Peter’s), what Self told Dana Jacobson in her post-match interview very meaningful. He said his team couldn’t have played any better in the second half. It was also a special moment for him for family reasons.

This will be Self’s first trip to the Finals without his father. He is using his late father’s quote “don’t worry about the mules, just load the wagon” as a rallying call for his Big 12 basketball team. If Kansas defeats a depleted Villanova team in the national semifinals, the Jayhawks will have a very good chance of winning their fourth national championship in the school’s history.

I am now two games away from a second national championship when leading Kansas to two wins.
