McIntyre took part in a grueling program with The Apex Predator Randy Orton in August, where he defeated The Viper in their first encounter at Summerslam. They faced off again at the Clash of the Champions pay-per-view event, but McIntyre once again retained his WWE Title Orton after some assists from WWE Legends Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, Big Show and Christian, which Orton gave ahead of the Shows had inflicted severe pain on this match.
Finally, on October 25 at Hell in a Cell, Orton defeated McIntyre to become the new WWE Champion for the 14th time in his long, illustrious career.
