EVE Online opens applications for closed beta testing of its Excel spreadsheet integration

The literal application of “spreadsheets in space” e.g EVE Online comes one step closer to reality. The game’s integration with Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software, unveiled at last year’s EVE Fanfest, is now poised to garner names for an upcoming closed beta of the feature.

The announcement once again explains the rationale for this integration, arguing that adding this functionality will “level the playing field in data-driven warfare and democratize intelligence gathering without the need for coding skills.” Just how deep this rabbit hole runs, the post confirms that data as simple as generic New Eden details or as specific as wallet balances, recent market orders and wealth information can be used for analysis and general number crunching. “EVE has been dubbed the spreadsheets in space, and there will soon be even better ways to stand out in the game (see what we did there?),” the post reads.

Players interested in these crunchy numbers simply need to fill out a survey to put their name in the hat for possible Closed Beta admission. CCP Games notes that it aims for “a variety of playstyles and experiences” in order to have the widest possible test group, so not every application will be accepted. The announcement also notes that there is no release date for the feature or any dates for when testing will start or end, but it’s still a bit closer to release.
