Ethan Hawke has enjoyed an incredibly successful acting career since debuting in the 1985 film explorer. He’s worked with a ton of different directors throughout his career and he knows the kind of filmmakers he enjoys working with.
Most recently he worked with director Robert Egger on the insane looking viking revenge movie The Northman and working on this production was a new and great experience for Hawke. In a recent interview with The New Yorker, the actor compared his experience working with Eggers to producing apocalypse now, but in a good way. He said:
“So much of filmmaking is people trying to sell you something. I’ve spent my life wondering will I ever be on a set that feels like ‘Apocalypse Now’? You know, someone’s trying. He has the balls and the hubris and the arrogance to say, “I want to make a masterpiece. I’m going to write a film about Vikings with an Icelandic poet. And shoot it in one.” No film has ever been choreographed like this.’ So, for me it’s like jumping off a nosedive when I see someone do a swing like that.”
That sounds like great praise! That sounds like the kind of director any actor would want to work with. Hawke goes on to say that directors like Eggers are an incredibly rare breed. In a separate interview with Total Film, he said:
“It was great. It’s incredibly rare for someone to strive for the level of excellence that Robert aspires to [for]. The level of discipline and ambition was sky high. It’s fun sometimes to watch someone swing for the fences. Robert wasn’t trying to make a good film. He tried to create a phenomenal work of art. I mean, he pushed himself and all of us to the limit. And honestly, I just loved it.”
I think it’s safe to say that one day Hawke and Eggers will be collaborating on another film project. Eggers has great style and is known for his attention to detail and historical accuracy in the films he has made, including The witch and The lighthouse.
The Northman Set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century, the story explores how far a Viking prince will go to avenge his murdered father. The cast also includes Alexander skarsgard, Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor Joy, Bjork, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson.
The Northman hits theaters on April 22nd.
