However, at his first press conference, the Dutchman said he was very much looking forward to working alongside Cristiano Ronaldo next season – who finished that season as United’s top scorer.

“Naturally,” he said when asked if he was looking forward to working with the Portugal captain.

When asked what Ronaldo could bring, Ten Hag added “Goals.” It was then suggested that Ronaldo could take a bigger leadership role in the final year of his contract. “I’ll talk to Ronaldo first before I talk to you” replied Ten Hag.

Ten Hag refused to confirm whether Harry Maguire would continue as captain after a difficult season for the England international but praised the centre-back as one ‘good player’.

“I have to repeat, next season is a different season” he said. “He’s done a good job, he’s a great player, he’s achieved a lot and made his contribution to Manchester United so I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Erik ten Hag was also asked about midfielder Donny van de Beek, who is returning from a loan at Everton. He said, “Yes of course. I have a fantastic relationship with him. I look forward to seeing him again.”
