Emoni Bates enters the portal – The Athletic

It’s college basketball free agency season.

Well, not technically. But in the age of free one-time transfers (as well as graduate transfers), the off-season has become a time for teams to radically overhaul their rosters. Nearly 1,700 players entered the transfer portal last year and while those numbers may have been boosted by the pandemic, we can expect another busy spring and summer of player movement.

The Athletic is here to help you keep up with all transactions. We’ve ranked the best untied transfers and high school prospects and kept updating this list as players rank up and down. College players are listed here by the class in which they will compete in the 2022-23 season. A good rule of thumb to remember with the Portal: Guards are always easier to find than Bigs.

One of those guards, Andre Curbelo, has disappeared from the market. Curbelo announced his commitment to St. John’s via social media; Born in New York, he was 8th in our transfer portal ranking at the time of his signing.

Let’s Go Portaling (and Crootin’):

1. Nijel Package | 6 feet | Junior Guard | State of Kansas

Pack suits pretty much every team in the country. He is capable of playing both guard spots but has broken away from the ball alongside Markquis Nowell this season, allowing him to focus more on scoring. He’s one of the best knockdown shooters in the country and can do it quickly, either from the jump or the catch. Emoni Bates enters the portal – The Athletic
