Emma Raducanu says she is ‘very pleased’ with her first Australian Open win over Sloane Stephens.

The British No. 1 defeated the American opponent 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 that saw her make the first set in just 17 minutes.

Raducanu, competing in only her third Grand Slam, has given a glimpse of the form she has shown in making history by winning US Open last year, but will be looking to get rid of her double mistakes and unwarranted mistakes in the next round.

This is also the first time Raducanu has gone all three sets at a Grand Slam, but the 19-year-old did his best to get a second round meeting with world No. 98 Danka Kovinic.

“I just want to thank everyone for coming and staying so late, I really appreciate that,” she said.

‘I think both me and Sloane really put things out there and gave everything we had, it was a very high quality match.

‘We’ve had some very long rallies but I’m happy to get past a great champion like her.

‘It was a tough match for the first round, I’m very happy and her fitness really increased.

‘I knew there were going to be some very long rallies and I had to work incredibly hard for my points and I’m so happy I got through.

‘I was very pleased to be on the court in the first set, I played some very good tennis with very few unwarranted errors.

‘Of course there will be some adversity and protracted rallies that she just got through with her defense but I’m happy to have rallied again.

‘In the third set, I don’t think the score really reflected the level there because I really felt that and just focused on trying to hit each ball between the lines.’

After Raducanu’s first round win over Stephens, the British star is currently ranked 16/1 on Betfair to win the Australian Open championship. She’s 25/1 to go all the way in Melbourne ahead of today’s game.
