Elton John concert: Molly Meldrum makes a splash with bare butt as Samuel Johnson slams the Morning Show star for bizarre behavior

Australian actor Samuel Johnson has blasted “national treasure” Ian “Molly” Meldrum over a bizarre performance he made at an Elton John concert over the weekend.

John was performing at Melbourne’s AAMI Park as he paid a beaming tribute to Meldrum, who later appeared on stage showing his bare bottom to the audience.

After a furore, Meldrum later apologized, blaming a faulty belt buckle for revealing his butt.

“I shouldn’t have ventured on stage, but I just wanted to tell Elton I love him,” he told the Herald Sun on Sunday.

“Some people thought it was part of the show. It was not. Elton had no idea I was going to jump on stage.

“Elton may have sung The Bitch Is Back, but it was more like the idiot is back.”

But Samuel Johnson didn’t hold back as he appeared on The Morning Show on Tuesday to discuss his new book Dear Lover.

Johnson and Meldrum have had their ups and downs in the past.

Johnson portrayed Meldrum in the 2016 miniseries “Molly,” and Meldrum memorably brought Johnson’s 2017 Gold Logie speech in which he attempted to raise funds for cancer – the disease that claimed his sister Connie’s life – Crash.

It seems Johnson hasn’t forgotten the controversial stunt – claiming that Meldrum ruined his “million dollar moment”.

Johnson also said he has not spoken to Meldrum since the incident.

“I will never speak to him again. It cost my charity a million dollars that night,” Johnson said.

“I want to do him a service, not a disservice. I’m a little uncomfortable talking about it,” Johnson told hosts Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies.

“First of all, thank you Molly. He got me out of the legal pickle and I’ve known him for 20 years. He visited my sister in the hospital when she was diagnosed with cancer in the 1980s at the age of 11.

“I’m really grateful for everything Molly has done in our lives. But at the same time that I won the Gold Logie, I was about to have my million dollar moment and I specifically told him not to come on stage. He wasn’t nominated, it was my moment.

“I wanted to shoot about cancer and he wanted to do it over the network. He ended up joining the Gold Logies and it was my million dollar moment that went wrong,” Johnson fumed.

“It was an absolute disaster. He sang very drunk for a full eight minutes. Now I saw him again at the Elton John concert. Maybe it’s time to hang up your hat, mate. I hope he’s fine.”

A visibly agitated Johnson didn’t hold back his thoughts on Meldrum’s behavior after the Elton John concert.

“I thought his apology was wrong. I don’t think it was a wardrobe malfunction,” he said.

“I think if it had been a wardrobe malfunction we would have seen his underwear, not his bum.

“I haven’t said anything in years. I don’t want to say anything. Who are his minders? Is he alright? He shouldn’t be left out in the PM.

“He has two shots of vodka in his coffee in the morning. If I’m going to make sense of him, I need to see him before noon. Stop, Molly, stop!”

Meldrum himself has spoken about his love for vodka in the past, stating that he “could clearly see now that the vodka is gone” after abstaining from the drink for a time in 2016 following a fall while on holiday in Thailand.

During his concert, Elton John called Meldrum – his friend of 50 years – a “national treasure”.

“I’ve known Molly since I came to Australia,” he said.

“He helped me so much in Australia, he helped every single musician that was here.

“He really is a national treasure. I want to thank him for the love and loyalty he has shown me over the years. He’s an amazing man. Molly, thank you very much, I love you.”
