Elie Mystal on the Alabama Voting Map: ‘This is Jim Crow’

MSNBC collaborator Elie Mystal claims that a controversial redistricting map is evidence that the Jim Crow era has retreated to Alabama.

On Monday, the US Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in favor of upholding a redistricting map that a lower court ruled needed to be redrawn.

Judge John Roberts sided with the court’s liberal side, while five judges argued that a new map would disrupt the upcoming primaries.

POLITICO report,

… Judges Brett Kavanaugh and Samuel Alito signaled that they believed an order from a panel of three federal judges, ordering a redraw of the state’s congressional districts, would cause too much disruption to the election. primaries are set for May 24, and absentee voting in those races is due to open March 30.

One major complaint was that the new map brought Black voters from multiple metro areas of Alabama into a single county.

Mystal joins ReidOut on Tuesday to discuss the court’s decision with Joy Reidguests too Joyce Vance and Deuel Ross.

Reid asked Mystal to weigh in on the decision and the map, which critics said was detrimental to Black voters.

Mystal dismissed the court’s decision as proof that the state’s segregated past had returned.

“Joy, I don’t know what to tell everyone,” Mystal said. “This is not like Jim Crow anymore. This To be Jim Crow.” He continued,

This is what courts did back in the Jim Crow days. My mother is 70 years old. She was born in 1950 – more than 70 years old – born in 1950 in Mississippi. She lived through this. And it’s happening again. And I just can’t seem to get everyone, even the Democrats, interested. Because at the end of the day, all the court has to do, all the Supreme Court has to do is refuse to enforce the 15th Amendment, and apply it against the states. We have had laws before. We had the Civil Rights Act of 1870, which made it illegal to discriminate on the basis of race and voting. Does it have any problem? Is not. Not when conservatives control the courts.

“So as long as you let conservatives control the third branch of government, nothing stops,” Mystal stated. “Nothing happened. Only racism is allowed to continue.

“What is that Brett Kavanaugh did. What is that Neil Gorsuch did and the rest of the five of them. And don’t give any credit to your boy John Roberts.”
