Last week, I said FromSoftware is “back to its bullshit“In response to the mood Elden Ring cinematic introduces the game world and the main characters. Instead, I wish I’d saved that particularly evocative phrase for today’s story because, if finding a way to poison players in less than 90 seconds isn’t the perfect example of the franchise FromSoftware’s punishment game, I don’t know what.
I just spent a single day with Elden Ring, which means I spend a few hours on adventures that could span hundreds. I have yet to discover an area on the same level as, say, Dark souls‘Blighttown or SekiroAshina depth. But lo and behold, there exists a pool of poison just outside the guide, connecting the Graveyard stuck where Elden Ring begins in earnest with the more dangerous Fringefolk Hero’s Tomb.
This obsession was not accessible in the closed network test that gave a lucky few a chance to play Elden Ring the first time when it was locked behind an image like a statue depicting two people participating in a game of toadstools. However, using a key item called the Stonesword Key, this mechanism can be unlocked. I can only assume that the vast world of Elden Ring are hiding more of these keys, but the game gives you the chance to start with a key by choosing it as your keepsake during character creation.
Thus, it took less than 90 seconds from the first time Elden Ring Allows you to control your character to give them a slow-killing poison. I’m currently the world record holder in Get Poisoned & speedrun, but I welcome any and all challengers when the game launches this weekend.
It’s no secret that FromSoftware loves poisonous swamps. Every one of them soul-like game, word the soul of the devil and Dark souls trio to Bloodborne and even Sekiro: Shadows Die Twiceconsists of toxic environments, difficult to traverse, gradually affecting the player’s health. Elden Ring Director Hidetaka Miyazaki even joked about this friendliness in a January 28 interview with Game informant.
“As for how players feel when they encounter this area, that’s a different story,” said Miyazaki. “But when doing [Elden Ring], I have rediscovered my love for poison marsh creation. I know how people feel about them, but you know, suddenly I realized that I was in the middle of creating one and I just couldn’t help myself. It just happened.”
Although this poison pit is not literally a swamp, I applaud FromSoftware for putting something very malicious at the beginning of the game. And not to spoil the surprise or anything, but Fringefolk’s Hero’s Cave is fraught with dangers even greater than this. I recommend avoiding it altogether early on or, if you can’t resist the temptation, plunge into its depths and grab what you can before you die. That is, of course, if you can avoid poisoning first.
